What is RunStrict?

RunStrict is a free location-based GPS running game available on iOS and Android where players physically run through hexagonal territory tiles to capture them for their team. Using Uber's H3 grid system at resolution 9 (~175m per hex), every step a runner takes flips territory on a real city map. As of September 2026, RunStrict has 1,200+ active runners across 8 cities.

RunStrict vs Strava vs Nike Run Club vs Pokemon GO

Unlike Strava and Nike Run Club which focus on personal fitness tracking (distance, pace, heart rate), RunStrict adds a competitive territory-capture game layer where every run is a strategic move in team-based territorial warfare. Unlike Pokemon GO which requires only walking, RunStrict requires actual running with pace verification under 12 min/km, accelerometer anti-cheat, and GPS accuracy checks. RunStrict combines the physical tracking of a fitness app with the competitive strategy of a location-based game.

How RunStrict Teams Work: FLAME vs WAVE vs CHAOS

Every hex a runner crosses is one of three kinds: new ground (never run by anyone, in any season), a friendly hex (already held by the runner's team), or an enemy hex (held by another team). Each team splits the same 10 points across those three kinds, so the split defines the team's doctrine. Friendly hexes pay once per hex per day; new and enemy hexes pay on every run. There are no multipliers, tiers, or buffs — the scoring table is the whole rule, and it is set server-side so it can be tuned without an app update.

FLAME (Red) — attack: new ground 3, friendly 1, enemy 6. Best for runners who like to push into the other side's streets.

WAVE (Blue) — hold: new ground 3, friendly 6, enemy 1. Best for runners who show up every day on the same streets and defend them together.

CHAOS (Purple) — explore: new ground 6, friendly 2, enemy 2. Best for runners who map out streets nobody has ever run.

All three teams are chosen at season registration and the choice is locked for the 40-day season. There is no mid-season defection.

How RunStrict Territory Ownership Works

Hexes (Uber H3 resolution 9, ~175m) roll up into provinces, countries, regions and continents. Ownership is decided by a nightly batch at midnight GMT+2. Team color always shows who holds each hex. Zoomed out to the region level, the map labels each region with the home province of the runners who hold the most ground there; at the continent level, it flies the flag of the nationality that holds the most. Ties keep the previous day's owner. Per-hex owner details are never shown — only these aggregates.

What is The Void in RunStrict?

The Void is RunStrict's 40-day season reset event. When a season ends, all season points, rankings and team assignments are wiped and every runner picks a team again. The hex map is not reset — the land remembers its last runner's team color, and a snapshot of the final map is archived each season. Because "new ground" means a hex never run in any season, untouched hexes become rarer over time. Seasons roll over automatically every 40 days; the current season number and dates are shown live on the site.

RunStrict Anti-Cheat System

RunStrict uses multi-layer anti-cheat to ensure only real running counts: 25 km/h speed cap, accelerometer verification to confirm physical movement, GPS accuracy must be 50m or better, and runners must keep a 20-second moving-average pace under 12 min/km for hex capture to activate. Points are classified and scored server-side against the previous midnight's map snapshot. GPS spoofing and location faking are detected and blocked.

RunStrict Battery and Performance

RunStrict uses battery-optimized 0.5 Hz GPS polling (once every 2 seconds) and syncs data only on app launch, resume, and run completion. There are no persistent WebSocket connections. This design keeps battery drain minimal even during long runs.

  • Pick once per season. Choose FLAME, WAVE or CHAOS when you register. Your team is locked until The Void.
  • Your hexes pay once a day. Re-running ground your team already holds scores once per hex per day. New and enemy hexes score every run.
  • New means never run. The map carries over between seasons, so a hex only counts as new ground until the first runner in history crosses it.

Everything you need to know before your first run.

RunStrict is a location-based GPS running game where your physical runs capture hexagonal territory tiles on a real map of your city. Choose a team — FLAME, WAVE, or CHAOS — flip hexes, and battle for dominance before the 40-day season resets in The Void.

GPS tracks your route in real-time. Every ~175m hexagonal tile you physically run through flips to your team’s color. The last runner through a hex holds it. Keep your pace under 12 min/km to activate capture mode. No spoofing — accelerometer verification blocks cheaters.

Yes — RunStrict is completely free. Available now on the App Store for iOS and Google Play for Android.

The Void is the season-end reset every 40 days. All points, rankings and team picks are wiped, and everyone chooses a team again. The map itself is not reset — the land remembers its last runner — so the next season starts on contested ground, and truly untouched hexes only get rarer.

Every team splits the same 10 points across three kinds of hex. FLAME if you like to attack — an enemy hex pays 6, new ground 3, your own 1. WAVE if you like to hold — your own hexes pay 6 (once per hex per day), new ground 3, enemy 1. CHAOS if you like to explore — a hex nobody has ever run pays 6, everything else 2. You pick once when you register; the choice is locked until The Void.

Every hex you cross is one of three kinds: new ground (nobody has ever run it), a friendly hex (your team already holds it) or an enemy hex. Your team’s table sets the points — FLAME 3 / 1 / 6, WAVE 3 / 6 / 1, CHAOS 6 / 2 / 2 for new / friendly / enemy. Friendly hexes pay once per hex per day; new and enemy hexes pay every run. No multipliers, no buffs — the table is the whole rule.

Not during a season. You choose FLAME, WAVE or CHAOS when you register and the choice is locked until The Void. Every new season starts with a fresh choice among all three.

Hexes roll up into provinces, countries, regions and continents, settled every night at midnight GMT+2. Team color always shows who holds a hex. Zoom out to a region and the map names the home province of the runners holding the most ground there; zoom out to a continent and it flies the flag of the nationality holding the most. Ties keep yesterday’s owner. Nothing is ever shown per person.

RunStrict supports iOS 15+ (iPhone) and Android 10+. GPS accuracy ≤50m is required for hex capture. The app uses battery-optimized 0.5 Hz GPS polling, so it won’t drain your battery on long runs.

Strava and Nike Run Club focus on personal fitness tracking — distance, pace, heart rate. RunStrict adds a competitive territory-capture game layer on top of your runs. Every run is a strategic move in a team-based territorial war where you flip hex tiles, score by your team’s doctrine, and compete on tiered leaderboards. Think of it as Strava meets Risk.

RunStrict shares the location-based concept but requires actual running with pace verification (under 12 min/km). There are no virtual creatures — you're capturing real territory tiles on a city map through physical athletic effort. Anti-cheat measures including accelerometer verification ensure only real runs count.

RunStrict works globally — the H3 hex grid covers every city on the planet. Territory capture works anywhere with GPS coverage. Available worldwide on iOS via the App Store and Android via Google Play.
